Every authenticated specimen has been recovered suspended beneath compact masses of cloud, its pale blossoms opening only after sunset and closing before the first hint of dawn. The mechanism by which the plant draws nourishment remains unresolved. This plate was prepared to record the mature flowering stage in full, including the distinctive cloud-root structure omitted from earlier botanical surveys. Contemporary records describe the mechanism as remaining in continuous motion, although no surviving account identifies a power source or maintenance schedule. No adjoining road, settlement or foundation has been recorded. The principal body of the moss exhibits the compact branching habit common to alpine species, though examination of transverse sections has revealed no equivalent internal structure among recognised terrestrial genera. Individual colonies expand with unusual regularity, frequently preserving near-circular boundaries regardless of the underlying rock formation. The present study includes a mature colony in flower together with enlarged views of the flowering structures and surface morphology. Surveyors have remarked that established colonies are seldom found in the company of other mosses. Whether this reflects environmental preference or competitive exclusion remains unrecorded. Flowering specimens are most commonly encountered beneath dense woodland canopies, where the surrounding vegetation permits only limited daylight to reach the forest floor. Unlike related orchids, the species produces a single bloom upon each stem, directing considerable growth toward the development of its unusually thick sepals and extensive subterranean rhizome. The polished margins of the petals display little evidence of weathering even in mature specimens. The specimen is reproduced here together with enlarged studies of the reproductive structures and root system. Botanical collections have noted that transplanted specimens frequently survive for several seasons without producing further flowers. No satisfactory explanation has been recorded. During the period of dispersal these fibres remain suspended for considerable distances behind the fruit, producing the appearance from which the species derives its common name. The vine itself displays rapid annual growth, attaching securely to cliff faces and mature woodland trees by means of finely divided tendrils. The seed pods mature sequentially rather than simultaneously, allowing extended periods of dispersal within a single season. This plate records a fruiting specimen together with enlarged studies of the developing pods and attachment structures. Detached seed pods have been recovered many miles from the nearest documented colonies. The mechanism responsible for their sustained transport has yet to be satisfactorily described. Each bell-shaped flower possesses a translucent outer surface through which the principal veins remain faintly visible. The flowering heads develop in orderly succession, allowing mature and juvenile blossoms to be observed upon the same specimen. The present illustration records the complete plant together with enlarged studies of the floral anatomy and suspended root structure. Attempts to establish the species within conventional botanical collections have succeeded only while the original root mass remained undisturbed. The phenomenon is present under both direct and overcast light and has not been attributed to surface moisture, mineral deposits, or known structural pigmentation. Young fronds emerge with ordinary green foliage before gradually acquiring their characteristic blue, green, and violet lustre during maturation. Examination of preserved specimens has shown the colouration to remain visible after drying, though with diminished intensity. The accompanying plate illustrates a mature frond. No cultivated specimen has developed the characteristic iridescence following propagation by spore. All authenticated examples exhibiting the phenomenon have been collected from established wild colonies.
