We chose this for its graphic strength: arches, stairs, walls, or towers carry the composition before the details begin to unfold. It is historical in subject but easy to live with.
About the artist & work
Jan van Goyen painted this river fortress in 1647, but the castle itself never existed. He assembled its towers, walls and crumbling masonry from studies of real medieval monuments, creating an imaginary stronghold that feels convincingly observed. Fishermen and boats bring everyday life to the invented architecture.
