About the work

Published in 1801 for Robert John Thornton’s The Temple of Flora, this plate gathers five varieties of hyacinth against a coastal landscape. Engraver Thomas Warner worked after Sydenham Teak Edwards, combining aquatint, stipple, colour printing and hand colouring to make the flowers monumental rather than diagrammatic.
