About the work

Karl Blechen’s haunting ca. 1824 drawing imagines a medieval monastery overtaken by water and vegetation. The long arcaded wall dissolves into trees, reflections and flooded ground, turning architecture into a study of nature slowly reclaiming the built world. The drawing is related to a celebrated 1824 painting destroyed by fire in 1931, but differs enough in composition and handling to stand as an independent work.
