About the work
Maria Sibylla Merian painted this botanical study in Amsterdam in 1693. Caper and gorse are rendered with her characteristic close observation, joined by a vivid red beetle that turns the sheet from floral study into a miniature ecology. The work was made during the years when Merian and her daughters produced autonomous watercolours for collectors, before her later expedition to Surinam.
