About the work
Published in 1804 for Robert John Thornton’s The Temple of Flora, this aquatint places a blue Egyptian water lily against the Nile at Aboukir Bay, with palms and a mosque in the middle distance. Botanical specimen and landscape are treated with equal theatricality, lifting the plant out of the herbarium and into an imagined stage.
