About the work

Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s ca. 1749–50 Gothic Arch belongs to the first state of his Carceri d’invenzione (Imaginary Prisons). Staircases, bridges and massive stonework interlock into a space that appears buildable at first glance and impossible a moment later. The architecture has no fixed destination; circulation becomes the subject, with paths multiplying through shadow and masonry.
