Why we chose it
We chose this for the way Piranesi turns architecture into a mental landscape: stairs, bridges, and stonework seem to lead somewhere, then undo the promise. Its graphic structure gives a room presence without relying on loud colour.
About the artist & work
Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s ca. 1749–50 Gothic Arch belongs to the first state of his Carceri d’invenzione (Imaginary Prisons). Staircases, bridges and massive stonework interlock into a space that appears buildable at first glance and impossible a moment later. The architecture has no fixed destination; circulation becomes the subject, with paths multiplying through shadow and masonry. Its sense of place and finely observed detail make it a thoughtful focal point for a study, reading room, or gallery wall.
