Catalogue Entry

The Eclipse Orchid is distinguished by broad petals of exceptional darkness surrounding a narrow golden corona. Flowering specimens are most commonly encountered beneath dense woodland canopies, where the surrounding vegetation permits only limited daylight to reach the forest floor.

Unlike related orchids, the species produces a single bloom upon each stem, directing considerable growth toward the development of its unusually thick sepals and extensive subterranean rhizome. The polished margins of the petals display little evidence of weathering even in mature specimens.

The specimen is reproduced here together with enlarged studies of the reproductive structures and root system.

Registrar's Notes

Botanical collections have noted that transplanted specimens frequently survive for several seasons without producing further flowers. No satisfactory explanation has been recorded.
