Star Moss occurs as dense cushions upon exposed stone, favouring isolated outcrops where little other vegetation is present. Mature colonies produce rigid five-rayed flowering bodies whose crystalline surfaces retain remarkable clarity despite prolonged exposure to frost, wind, and mineral deposits.
The principal body of the moss exhibits the compact branching habit common to alpine species, though examination of transverse sections has revealed no equivalent internal structure among recognised terrestrial genera. Individual colonies expand with unusual regularity, frequently preserving near-circular boundaries regardless of the underlying rock formation.
The present study includes a mature colony in flower together with enlarged views of the flowering structures and surface morphology.
Registrar's Notes
Surveyors have remarked that established colonies are seldom found in the company of other mosses. Whether this reflects environmental preference or competitive exclusion remains unrecorded.
