Catalogue Entry

The Moonbell Lily produces pendulous white blossoms borne upon slender stems arising from compact masses of suspended root tissue rather than conventional soil. Fully developed plants are most frequently encountered within elevated cloud forests, where persistent moisture permits continuous growth throughout much of the year.

Each bell-shaped flower possesses a translucent outer surface through which the principal veins remain faintly visible. The flowering heads develop in orderly succession, allowing mature and juvenile blossoms to be observed upon the same specimen.

The present illustration records the complete plant together with enlarged studies of the floral anatomy and suspended root structure.

Registrar's Notes

Attempts to establish the species within conventional botanical collections have succeeded only while the original root mass remained undisturbed. Specimens transferred to prepared soils have consistently declined.
