A spare Qing-dynasty flower study balancing pale blossom, red blooms and quiet foliage.
Why we chose it
We kept returning to the way this image holds delicacy and structure together. It feels studied without becoming stiff, and decorative without losing the sense that a real eye is paying attention.
About the artist & work
Yun Bing’s 17th-century album leaf uses ink and colour to balance a large pale blossom with smaller red flowers and restrained foliage. The composition belongs to the Chinese bird-and-flower tradition while remaining unusually spare.
