Four prized tulip cultivars recorded with the precision of a botanical study and the presence of a portrait.
Why we chose it
At first glance, this is a botanical study. The longer view is more interesting: the plant is given the attention usually reserved for a portrait. We curated it for that balance of recognition and strangeness, and for the way its detail brings colour without becoming generic floral decor.
About the artist & work
Jacob Marrel’s ca. 1635–45 watercolour records four prized cultivars: Boter man, Joncker, Grote geplumaceerde and Voorwint. Created during the era of Dutch tulip speculation, the sheet belongs to the tradition of Tulpenboeken—albums that documented rare bulbs with a precision somewhere between botanical record and luxury portrait.
