Five hyacinth varieties made monumental in Thornton’s theatrical Temple of Flora.
Why we chose it
At first glance, this is a botanical study. The longer view is more interesting: the plant is given the attention usually reserved for a portrait. We curated it for that balance of recognition and strangeness, and for the way its detail brings colour without becoming generic floral decor.
About the work
Published in 1801 for Robert John Thornton’s The Temple of Flora, this plate gathers five varieties of hyacinth against a coastal landscape. Engraver Thomas Warner worked after Sydenham Teak Edwards, combining aquatint, stipple, colour printing and hand colouring to make the flowers monumental rather than diagrammatic. Engraved by Thomas Warner after Sydenham Teak Edwards and published by Robert John Thornton; the original is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The work is made available as public domain through The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Open Access programme. This print is produced as part of the Museum of Imagined Worlds art project.
