Why we chose it
We kept returning to the way this image holds delicacy and structure together. It feels studied without becoming stiff, and decorative without losing the sense that a real eye is paying attention.
About the artist & work
Maria Sibylla Merian painted this botanical study in Amsterdam in 1693. Caper and gorse are rendered with her characteristic close observation, joined by a vivid red beetle that turns the sheet from floral study into a miniature ecology. The work was made during the years when Merian and her daughters produced autonomous watercolours for collectors, before her later expedition to Surinam. Its botanical detail and historical character make it a thoughtful focal point for a study, bedroom, or collected gallery wall.
