The Comet Vine is a vigorous climbing species recognised by the elongated silken appendages borne beneath each mature seed pod. During the period of dispersal these fibres remain suspended for considerable distances behind the fruit, producing the appearance from which the species derives its common name.
The vine itself displays rapid annual growth, attaching securely to cliff faces and mature woodland trees by means of finely divided tendrils. The seed pods mature sequentially rather than simultaneously, allowing extended periods of dispersal within a single season.
This plate records a fruiting specimen together with enlarged studies of the developing pods and attachment structures.
Registrar's Notes
Detached seed pods have been recovered many miles from the nearest documented colonies. The mechanism responsible for their sustained transport has yet to be satisfactorily described.
